At least 51 civilians have been killed in an attack by Muslim extremists in Mali. At the same time, they attacked three villages in the center of the country, near the border with Niger. There is also an unknown number of injured.
According to local authorities, indiscriminate shots were fired on the streets and in houses in Ouatagouna, Karou and Deouteguef. Houses were also set on fire. The Malian army has been called for reinforcements.
Responsibility for the attack has not yet been claimed. ISIS and al-Qaida fighters are active in the area. They profit from the political unrest in Mali and can therefore expand their territory further and further.
Unrest after coup
In May there was another coup in the African country, the second in nine months. Colonel Goita seized power after President Ndaw removed two senior military officials as ministers.
Ndaw and Prime Minister Ouane were imprisoned and Goita was appointed interim president by the Supreme Court until next February’s elections.
The international community has strongly condemned the events in Mali and warned against the advance of jihadist groups.
