From the 2024-2025 season, the UEFA Champions League will be reformed but not at all simplified, on the contrary. The newspaper The team looks at the transformation of the major European competition. Let’s take stock of the new UEFA plan normally adopted tomorrow by the club competitions committee: 36 clubs at the start (three places guaranteed for France + a play-off), divided into 4 hats of 9 teams (according to the UEFA index) brought to play a kind of championship within a single group. Each team will play 5 home matches, 5 away matches against ten different teams. At the end of these ten days (at 18 matches), the general classification with 36 teams will release three slices. The first 8 will go directly to the round of 16. The teams classified beyond the 25th place will leave the competition. The clubs in the 9th-24th place will be entitled to play-offs (round trip) to try to reach the round of 16. Then, classic, eighth, quarter and half with round-trip matches. “On arrival, the winner and the finalist of the Champions League would play 17 matches instead of 13 today”, notes the sports newspaper. “And even 19 if they go through the play-offs”. Finally, from the 2024-2025 season, the Europa League and the Europa League Conference (the new European Cup) will have the same operating system but with 32 clubs.
