At least 31 dead in Brazil storm

At least 29 people have died in landslides caused by heavy rainfall in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. More than a thousand people have had to leave their homes. In the neighboring state of Alagoas, two people have died when they were swept away by the water.

The northeast of Brazil has been dealing with heavy rains for days. According to authorities in Pernambuco, some 32,000 families are at risk from landslides and floods. In Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, homeless people are sheltered in school buildings.

President Bolsonaro on Twitter expressed his condolences to the victims and announced that more than 196 million euros has been made available for emergency aid and reconstruction and that soldiers are being sent to the affected areas to help.
