29 people, including children, have been killed in a storming of a church meeting in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. That happened last night during an all-night Christian worship service. The service took place on a football field on the outskirts of the capital.
An eyewitness told Reuters news agency that a group of men with machetes and other weapons approached the crowd. People fled, and in the chaos that ensued, many fell over each other.
Because a number of people are in critical condition in hospital, a police spokesman expects the number of deaths to rise.
Liberian President George Weah has announced a three-day period of national mourning. He is expected to visit the disaster site this afternoon.
