Two trains collided head-on in northern Greece, causing a number of wagons to derail. 26 people died, the fire service reports. There are also 85 injured, 25 of whom are in serious condition.
The passenger train was en route from Thessaloniki to Larissa when it collided with a freight train near midnight. That happened at Tempe, about 380 kilometers north of the capital Athens. Four wagons have derailed. Two of them have been almost completely destroyed by fire, says the fire service.
The accident could have happened due to an error in the planning of train traffic, government sources report to broadcaster SKAI. The emergency services are massively present and the army has also been called in.
Rescuers are trying to get people out of the wreckage. According to SKAI, there were 350 passengers and 20 staff on board. 250 passengers are said to have left the train unharmed.
