At least 25 people killed in Rio de Janeiro

A shooting in Rio de Janeiro has killed at least 25 people, including a police officer, according to BBC News.

The shooting took place during a police operation in a slum area on the outskirts of the city in Favela, Jacarezinho district.

Police launched the operation after receiving reports that drug traffickers were recruiting children for their gang.

Two subway passengers were hit by bullets, but they survived.

Police in a Brazilian city have confirmed the death of one of their officers, Inspector Andre Leonardo de Melo Frias. A statement on Facebook said that “he honored his beloved profession and he will be missed.”

Police chief Ronald Oliveira told Reuters on Thursday, May 6, the raid had “the highest death toll in a police operation in Rio.”

According to local reports, the gang involved in the raid is involved in drug trafficking, murder and kidnapping.

Television images showed suspects trying to escape across rooftops when police entered Favela.
