At least 24 deaths in Central America from hurricane Iota | NOW

At least 24 people were killed in Central America by hurricane Iota. The death toll is expected to rise further as several badly affected areas are now inaccessible due to flooding, power outages and other storm damage.

Iota landed in Nicaragua and continued to Honduras, where the hurricane weakened into a tropical storm. At least 16 people died in Nicaragua.

There were also victims in El Salvador, Panama and Colombia as a result of the storm with wind speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour. More than 200,000 people in Central America, especially in Nicaragua, have fled to shelters.

In the coming days, countries may have to deal with the remains of Iota, which, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), could lead to new floods and mudslides.

Iota is the thirtieth severe storm in this part of the world this year, which is a record. The old record was 28. Before the arrival of Iota, the region was still reeling from hurricane Eta, which also caused a lot of damage and caused at least 174 fatalities in Honduras and Guatemala, among others.
