At least 20 people killed in protests in Myanmar on Monday / Day

Protests have taken place in Myanmar since February 1, when the army seized power in the country and detained civilian leaders, including the de facto head of government, Auna San Suu Kyi. Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets demanding the restoration of democracy.

Security forces brutally suppress demonstrations almost every day, sending tear gas, rubber bullets and real bullets.

The AAPP said on Tuesday that at least 20 people had died in the violence on Monday, and more than 180 since the February 1 coup.

Although most of those killed on Monday were demonstrators, there were also some civilians who “did not even take part in the protests,” the AAPP said.

Most of the victims lost their lives in central Myanmar on Monday, but at least three were killed in the country’s largest city, Yangon. Among those killed in Yangon were two women in their homes who were shot while security forces opened fire on the streets.

Over the weekend, security forces brutally suppressed the demonstrations, making Sunday the bloodiest day ever. The AFP news agency confirmed that at least 44 people were killed on Sunday.
