At least 20 people have died and another 14 were injured due to the flash floods and heavy snowfall that have affected Afghanistan in the last week, Taliban government authorities reported this Saturday.
The deaths were caused by “heavy rain, snowfall and flash floods” about half of them in the last three days, the spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry of Disaster Management, Mullah Janan Sayeq, indicated in a video message.
Since last February 20, the weather conditions have caused damage to 403 houses, totally or partially destroyed, and the death of more than 5,140 heads of livestock, Sayeq added.
Natural disasters are increasing in intensity and severity, making Afghanistan the fourth most at risk country and the eighth most vulnerable and least prepared to adapt to the climate crisis, according to a recent report by the United Nations Office for Peace. Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
Afghanistan is suffering, according to OCHA, the brunt of climate change despite contributing just 0.08% to global greenhouse gas emissions. EFE
