New York – A fire at an apartment building in the Bronx, New York, has killed 19 people, according to Mayor Eric Adams. At least 63 residents were injured, including at least 32 with serious injuries, Adams told CNN on Sunday. Children are among the fatalities. “There were kids who got hurt and some kids lost their lives,” Adams said.
It looks like smoke quickly spread through the building. Many injuries are believed to be due to smoke inhalation. The door to the burning apartment on one of the lower floors was open. This allowed the smoke to spread quickly through the home.
At least 200 firefighters had moved against the fire in the 19-story apartment building, the fire department said. The fire broke out on Sunday morning (local time). Images circulating online showed huge flames and a thick plume of black smoke pouring out of a window in the apartment building.
