At least 19 people, including nine children, have been killed in a fire at an apartment complex in New York’s The Bronx borough. Dozens of others were injured as a result of smoke inhalation. Thirteen of them are in critical condition in hospital, a spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams told the AP news agency.
The fire broke out on the second and third floors of the complex, which has a total of nineteen floors. New York Mayor Adams said the fire was caused by an electric heater in a bedroom. What went wrong is unknown.
The fire spread quickly, possibly because the door of the apartment where the fire broke out was left open. Authorities do not assume arson.
