At least 18 people have been killed in a bus crash in India. Another ten passengers were injured. The accident happened in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Local authorities say a truck rammed into an overcrowded double-decker bus.
The accident happened on the highway near Barabanki, centrally located in the state. “The bus was overloaded and was carrying about 150 passengers,” the chief inspector of police told Reuters news agency.
The injured were taken to a hospital in the regional capital Lucknow. Indian media report that many of the passengers on the bus were workers sleeping. The bus was said to have broken down on the highway just before the accident.
Prime Minister Modi said on Twitter that he was deeply saddened and offered his condolences to the bereaved families. Modi assures everyone that the affected passengers are treated properly.
