Traffic accidents have occurred across the country due to the wintry weather. At least 16 people were killed and hundreds were trapped on roads covered in ice and snow. In New York State, for example, the National Guard had to intervene after 500 motorists were trapped. At least one fatal victim was found in a car, a local official said. “People have nowhere to go, everything is closed, so stay home,” she said MSNBC.
Minneapolis, a city in the state of Minnesota, recorded its lowest temperature on Saturday. It was -21 degrees Celsius there. On Christmas morning, Fargo in North Dakota is expected to be the coldest place in the United States, with temperatures reaching -28 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures will return to normal across much of the US on Tuesday, but the East Coast will remain extremely cold through at least Thursday or Friday.
