At least 16 people were injured on Tuesday morning when gunfire rang out during rush hour on the New York City subway, and explosive devices were found at the scene, police and firefighters said. The incident is not currently the subject of a “terrorist act investigation“said city police chief Keechant Sewell.
“Cele is not under investigation for an act of terrorism, at this stage. We can also say that although it was a violent act, we don’t have anyone with life-threatening injuries.“, said the chief of police of New York during a press conference in Brooklyn, above the subway station where the shootings took place.
Ten of the 16 victims suffered gunshot wounds and five are in critical but stable condition.
Amateur photos and videos showed pools of blood and people lying on the floor of a subway train, as well as on the station platform”36th Street“, in the borough of Brooklyn, in a smoky atmosphere.
The perpetrator is said to have opened his backpack in a moving train before triggering smoke bombs. He then allegedly shot at several occupants of the train before fleeing when it stopped.
