Fifteen people were killed in the shooting, Governor Greg Abbott confirmed.
The 18-year-old shooter is killed 14 students and one teacher at the Robb Primary School in Uwalde.
The governor said the suspect was armed with a pistol and possibly a rifle during the attack.
Greg Abbott said the suspect had died and was believed to be the police killed him.
About 600 children study at the school. Other schools in the area are also closed, he said.
The first reports about the events at the school are received at 11:43 local time (19:43 Bulgarian time), Fox News clarifies. The AP reports that the shooter was detained after 13:00 (21:00 Bulgarian time).
Yuwalde is 140 km away west of San Antonio and 235 km southwest of Austin, near the border with Mexico.
