Shots were fired in rush hour

The shots were fired in the morning rush hour, it was reported ARD correspondent Peter Mücke. The emergency services were alerted around 8:30 a.m. local time. The subway station is south of Manhattan in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, Mücke said. Sunset Park used to be mainly industrial, but today many young people and families also live and work there.

Several subway lines meet at the station, the trains of which stopped at the stations. There were numerous delays and cancellations. Schools near the station were temporarily closed, US media quoted a spokesman for the New York school system as saying. Only school children were allowed in, but no one else and no one out.

Police give the all-clear: No active explosive devices

The broadcaster CNN showed a mobile phone video from the subway entering the station, in which smoke can be seen drifting through the carriage and people holding clothing in front of their faces. Police said a smoke grenade was detonated before the shots were fired. Contrary to what was initially reported, active explosive devices were not found, the New York police said on Twitter. She also urged people to avoid the area around the station.

Perpetrators possibly on the run

The investigators are now looking for a person wearing a gas mask and an orange work vest. Brooklyn Borough Mayor Mark Levine wrote on Twitter that the suspected shooter was still at large.

As ARD correspondent Antje Passenheim reported from New York, a terrorist background to the act currently seems unlikely. In recent months, however, firearm incidents have become a growing problem in the city.
