Severe flooding and landslides in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital have killed at least 120 people. Landslides have left a huge havoc in Kinshasa. Whole neighborhoods were flooded and houses sank.
The death toll will rise further, Health Minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani Mbanda said on Wednesday. Reuters. Rescue operations are still ongoing.
Due to landslides, main roads are impassable in several places. It will be at least another day before small vehicles are able to circulate on those roads again. Even trucks with food and basic necessities are only allowed to circulate on the roads on weekends.
Kinshasa has grown from a small fishing village to a mega city with fifteen million inhabitants. Due to the rapid growth, people without permits have been building houses on vulnerable land. According to local authorities, all those houses cause the sewers to become clogged, preventing the water from flowing properly.
