At least 100 killed in storms in Indian state of Maharashtra

Severe storms in the western Indian state of Maharashtra have claimed the lives of at least 100 people in recent days. According to the first reports, there were 36 victims, but that number has since been adjusted.

Rainfall landslides killed 54 people in western Maharashtra. In the city of Satara, 27 were also killed as a result of buildings collapsing or being swept away by water.

More than 1,000 people affected by the floods have been rescued. They were trapped on the roofs of houses and buses, among other things. At least 30 more people are missing.

The rainfall has since decreased in intensity, but high water threatens to make more victims. Prime Minister Modi has said the situation is being closely monitored by the authorities. The Navy, Army and Coast Guard assist in the rescue efforts.
