Hundreds of cars were scratched during the Hart voor Auto’s event in Assen. There have also been reports of loosened wheel bolts and water in a tank.
“A number of reports were received during the event and later we received about fifteen emails,” says Ronald van den Broek of the organization. In addition to the emails, the organization also received dash camera images. “It is very annoying that this has happened and we hope that people will report if they have seen something,” said Van den Broek.
Dozens of reports have now been received, although the police have not yet arrested anyone for the destruction. Most of the destruction consists of scratches on both windows and doors of the cars. Police expect the number of reports to rise further.
Van den Broek has no idea who is behind the destruction. “We have not had any signal from anyone saying that he did it for any particular reason. There are rumors on the internet that it was an action by environmental activists, but we have not noticed anything.”
About 2500 cars were on display at the Hart voor Auto’s event, from ordinary passenger cars to very expensive show cars. 402 automotive has been organizing such car shows in the Netherlands for 27 years, says the co-organizer. But never before had he had to deal with such large-scale destruction.
