An SMS that falls shortly before 6 p.m., to warn of a schedule change for the next morning. Extra hours that accumulate. Caregivers forced to do the “bare minimum” for their residents. This is the daily life described by the staff of the EHPAD Saint-Benoît de Caen (Calvados), who walked out on Thursday, September 2, 2021. A first walkout took place on June 24, 2021, three weeks after the arrival of a new direction.
“12 to 14 toilets per day”
Aurélie Le Bris, staff representative on the social and economic committee of the residence, along with Catherine Landry, explains:
We are well aware of the recruitment problems facing management. But we are asking for a new organization, and that labor law be respected. According to management, the crisis authorizes crisis measures …
However, according to the staff gathered in front of the entrance to the establishment (nursing assistants, hospital service agents, medico-psychological or nurses), the organization of work brings “moral pressure” and leads to “mistreatment. institutional ”. Some residents would not have had a shower for 15 days … “We end up doing 12 or 14 toilets a day … And we are told not to serve their coffee to residents in the morning, because we do not have it. time to change their sheets if they spill any … “
“No more replacements after August 15th”
Joël Loiseau, the director of the establishment, does not hide the difficulties he is facing. “In July, we managed to find replacements, especially students, for the holidays, but from August 15, we had no one, he regrets. The students also wanted to take a little vacation before the start of the academic year ”. Since mid-August, 40 days of absence have been recorded. Joël Loiseau continues:
The work has shifted to the present. The workforce is already tight, the staff is getting tired. Their reaction is legitimate. The business is in a complicated phase.
As for unforeseen planning changes, the director defends himself there too. “I am aware that it is not easy for the personal lives of employees, but sometimes we cannot do otherwise. We had replacements who withdrew at the last moment, or impromptu sick leave… ”
Agreement reached with management
Thursday September 2, a representative of the general management of the Saint-Benoît residences group traveled to Caen to meet the staff. “We have reached an agreement for financial compensation for the people present this summer”, reveals the director.
The Saint-Benoît residence currently has 65 employees (including administrative staff) for 89 residents. Regarding nursing staff, the establishment has 28 full-time equivalents for 104 residents in normal times (rooms are currently closed for renovations).
