“Why make this car so fast?” asked Musk rhetorically. “There is something that is very important for the future of sustainable energy, which is that we have to show that an electric car is the best car, without a doubt.”
Musk stated that the car is capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds. The car has an estimated range of 390 miles, and reaches a top speed of 320 km/h. The car costs $129,990 in the US.
“This is what I call engineering the edge of physics,” said Musk, wearing a black leather jacket with a checkered logo on the back. Tesla shares rose as much as 1% to $616 before regular trading began on Friday.
The Model S was Tesla’s revolutionary sedan, with initial deliveries starting in 2012. While the older Model S and X models are trumped by the newer, cheaper 3 and Y, the higher prices they charge make important contributions to profitability from the company. The first 25 Plaid cars were delivered to customers on Thursday, and Musk said he expects the company to deliver 1,000 a week in the next quarter.
During a presentation of less than 30 minutes, Musk reported improvements, including a new battery pack, carbon-encased rotors and tri-motor power train. The name Plaid is a reference to a high-speed space travel scene from the 1987 comedy movie “Spaceballs”.
