At 95% harvested corn, the average yield dropped to 274 kg/dca-Agro Plovdiv – 2024-10-24 12:38:00

The latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture on the harvest of corn at 95.4% harvested shows that farmers have lost about 35% of last year’s average yields due to hot and dry weather during the cereal growing season. The average yield per hectare, it stopped at 274 kg/ha compared to 420 kilograms measured last year. Accordingly, the harvested production is 34.3 percent less. Last year at this time, the maize crop was 1,961,000 tonnes, and this year it is 1,288,000 tonnes. Here we must clarify that the areas occupied by corn this year are about 200,000 decares less.

Redeemed price of corn as of October 16 is BGN 380/ton, which is 1.6% less than a year earlier. In a week, the price of corn has increased by BGN 6 per ton, according to SAPI data.

Wheat is also a slightly higher weekly price. As of October 9, bread grain was sold for BGN 371/kg, and as of October 16, for BGN 382. On an annual basis, wheat with baking qualities is cheaper. Last year it cost BGN 390.

In terms of price, among cereals and oilseed crops, the sunflower is the best performer (there is no data for rapeseed). In mid-October 2023, oilseeds were sold for BGN 674/t, and this year they are almost 33% more expensive – BGN 896, with the trend being that the price will continue to rise. This would be good news if this year’s sunflower yields were not so low – an average of 156 kg/ha.
