At 85 years old, Don Quishocking’s Fred Florusse has been reported dead

Don Quishocking was founded in the late 1960s and, in addition to Fred, consisted of Pieter van Empelen, George and Anke Groot and Jacques Klöters. The group won the Camaretten Festival and won various prizes such as a Silver Harp and the Louis Davids Prize for the Old School song. Don Quishocking made eleven programs, three of which in changing company after the temporary break-up in 1982.

Fred was then active as a presenter, actor and director. He was responsible for directing numerous theater shows by Hans Dorrestijn, Joke Bruijs, Paul de Leeuw, Karin Bloemen and Jack Spijkerman, among others. Fred was also at the cradle of the VARA radio programs Nails with Cups in In the Red Rooster.

In 2007, Don Quishocking reunited to celebrate the group’s 40th anniversary. The company then took the stage with the special performance: Things You Don’t See Anymore, with a selection of highlights from all shows. After that it came to a few incidental performances.

Fred’s family says he remained ‘active to the last’ and was still at the theater almost every week. “Fred had cancer, but only felt ill for a short time. He passed away today in the presence of one of his best friends, his wife and daughter. We will miss his zest for life, his beautiful voice and his optimism.”
