LaMarcus Aldridge announced Friday that he is retiring again from the NBA.
Aldridge, 37, originally retired in 2021 after experiencing an arrhythmia in the last of five games he played with the Brooklyn Nets that season. He rejoined the Nets five months after announcing his retirement.
A seven-time All-Star, Aldridge was diagnosed in his rookie season in 2007 with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, an abnormality that can cause arrhythmia.
Despite the diagnosis, Aldridge was one of the most dominant players of his generation in the paint. Selected No. 2 out of Texas in the 2006 draft, he averaged 19.1 points and 8.1 rebounds over his career.
Aldridge played his first nine seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and then spent the next five seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and his brief stint with the Nets.
“In the words of TB12 (Tom Brady), you just have one big, emotional retirement, so according to that, I thank you for all the memories, family and friends I’ve made throughout my career. It was a memorable trip and I enjoyed every minute of it,” he tweeted.
Aldridge, a five-time All-Team selection, was praised by San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich after he announced his first retirement, calling him an “accomplished professional with unique skills and a deep respect for the game.”
