/ world today news/ Today we say goodbye to the great poet and playwright Valeri Petrov. At 11:00 a.m. in the lobby of the Ivan Vazov National Theater in the capital, the worship to one of the most beloved Bulgarian artists begins.

Relatives, loved ones, friends and admirers will say their last goodbye to the genius of verse.

Valeri Petrov died after a stroke this Wednesday, August 27, at the age of 94.

Although a doctor by education, Valeri Mevorakh, as is the real name of Valeri Petrov, bequeathed us a huge legacy of lyrical and satirical poetry with a distinctive style, children’s books, film scripts, several plays. The child of a lawyer and a French teacher, the poet studied at the Italian school, after which he graduated in humanitarian medicine.

Somewhere between his work at Radio Sofia and his participation as a military writer in the Patriotic War, he also worked as a doctor in a Military Hospital and in the Rila Monastery. In the 1940s, he worked as part of the Bulgarian legation in Rome as press and culture attache.

He was an editor at the Feature Film Studio, editor of the “Bulgarian Writer” publishing house, as well as a representative in the 7th Grand National Assembly. In 2007, the master of verse plunged Darik’s listeners into the depths of the philosophy of his latest works.

Apart from his immortal creations, Valery Petrov is known for his translations of William Shakespeare into Bulgarian, which he bequeathed to generations.

In 1938, his first book “Birds to the North” was published under the pseudonym Asen Rakovski. Later, he wrote the poems “Palechko”, “On the Road”, “By the Blue Sea”. He is the author of screenplays for feature films, including The Knight Without Armour, One Shooting Day, Yo Ho Ho. Translates from English, German, Russian, Italian and Spanish.

Valeri Petrov has been an academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 2003, he was included in the list of honor of the International Council for Children’s Books because of Five Tales, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize.

In 2009, the genius of verse received the special award of Darik Radio for a comprehensive contribution to our lives.

In 2013, he was awarded the European Citizen Award of the European Parliament – for his contribution to Bulgarian culture and understanding between nations.
