The asylum seekers who arrived at the Van der Valk hotel in Uden on Wednesday will not be sent away. The municipality of Maashorst, which includes Uden, will not enforce the judge’s suspension and will await next Friday’s trial.
The judge suspended the permit for shelter in the hotel on Wednesday, after local residents went to court. As a result, the judge will not allow people to be accommodated in the hotel for the next two days.
The local residents want time to object and therefore requested the suspension. The judge will rule on the permit on Friday.
Maashorst has decided not to enforce the suspension and gives several reasons for this. According to the municipality, there is a prospect of legalization of the shelter at this location and the decision will be made two days later. The municipality also takes into account that the need is great and the conditions in Ter Apel are inhumane.
The municipality finds it “extremely undesirable” if more people are staying in the hotel in the current situation. According to a COA spokesperson, this will not happen in the short term.
When the judge suspended the permit on Wednesday, the first asylum seekers had already arrived at the hotel. The COA was concerned about whether there was room or whether this group, about fifty people, would be able to spend the night somewhere else. The place where the asylum seekers came from was already infested. Ultimately, they can spend the night in the hotel in Uden for the time being.
