ASVEL vs Cholet: ASVEL Secures 100-95 Victory in 19th Day Championship Match at Astroballe

ASVEL won against Cholet (100-95) for the 19th day of the championship at the Astroballe in Villeurbanne, Sunday January 14. Victory won in the last seconds of the match for Villeurbanne who fought until the end.

After a series of four matches in the Euroleague (two victories including the first by Pierric Poupet and two defeats, the latest against Alba Berlin 63-88), ASVEL was back in business in the championship.

Facing Cholet, for one of the posters of the 19th day of Pro A, Villeurbanne managed to win on its Astroballe floor (100-95), this Sunday, January 14.

A great operation to regain confidence and which confirms the good reaction of Pierric Poupet’s group.

This detour to the championship was only short-lived. ASVEL players will return to defend their colors in the Euroleague for the next match: Thursday January 18 in Bologna, Italy (8:30 p.m.).

47-47 at the break, the ASVEL players rolled up their sleeves

It was a game involving both sides which started under the eyes of the Astroballe spectators. Joffrey Lauvergne (5 points in the 1st quarter) was well inspired on the Villeurbanne side.

The pivot took, among other things, his team beyond the 20 point mark in the first quarter. But it was Cholet who led the score at the end of the first act of the match with a close score of 21-22.

The start of the second quarter was marked by the injury exit of new recruit DeShaun Thomas. The American winger suffered bleeding from his forehead after heavy contact with an opponent.

Fortunately nothing too serious for the number one of the Villeurbanne team who reappeared in the game five minutes before the break.

During the time he was stuck on the bench, the former Bayern Munich player (2021-2022) could only note Cholet’s slight domination in the game. Even if his teammates did not give up. The ambition was clear: take the lion’s share.

A decisive timeout was called in the last seconds of the second quarter by Pierric Poupet.

A remobilization with its players which seems to have had an impact on the minds since at half-time, the tie was perfect between ASVEL (on the 3rd step of the podium before the match) and Cholet (7th team of the ranking): 47-47.

The game of cat and mouse in the second half, Villeurbanne more realistic in the final seconds

Returning from the locker room, the game was still split between ASVEL and Cholet. It was then that a game of cat and mouse took place: when Villeurbanne regained the lead by a few points, Cholet immediately came back in the following seconds to equalize and regain control. And vice versa therefore.

To give examples: 47-47, 57-57 or even 69-69 which was the score at the end of the third quarter. As a nice coincidence for this match played in the Rhône department…

The suspense was then total before the outcome of the meeting. Neither Villeurbanne nor Cholet emerged as obvious favorites before the last 15 minutes.

At the end of a tough standoff during the last quarter, on the same basis as the third, it was ultimately Villeurbanne who came out on top.

A decisive three points scored by Edwin Jackson in the last 20 seconds which sounded like a sigh of relief in the Astroball.

100-95 victory for Villeurbanne who stifled Cholet at the very end of the match.
