ASV Hamm-Westphalia Dominates 2nd Handball Bundesliga: Defeats Dessau-Roßlauer HV 34-31

ASV Hamm-Westphalia is still leading the 2nd Handball Bundesliga unchallenged after seven match days. Against last year’s third-placed Dessau-Roßlauer HV, the Westphalia team celebrated a deserved 34:31 victory in front of 1,907 spectators in the WESTPRESS arena, which the favorites secured in the last ten minutes of the game.

As expected by both sides, this was preceded by an exchange of blows in which both teams pushed the pace at times but not consistently. The ASV was in the lead for almost the entire first half, but never more than three goals. And ASV went into the break with a narrow 19:18 lead. Both teams faced defensive challenges. For example, while Dessau had problems with the circle game and especially with Stefan Bauer, the defense players struggled against Timo Löser, who scored seven goals in the first period. Ex-ASVer Vincent Sohmann was also a constant troublemaker in the hosts’ defense with his quick legs.

In the second section, little changed in the course of the game. With 24:23 and 26:25 the guests also took the lead. But with the advantage, ASV regained the lead. In the 50th and 51st minutes, Niko Schöttle scored twice into the empty net after the defense had captured the ball. The ASV was now in the lead with 29:26. In retrospect, this series was crucial. Because circle runner Philip Jungemann increased the score to 30:26 in seven against six, which Michael Lerscht now relied on. The fans in the WESTPRESS arena had long since been moved from their seats – once again the front runner secured victory thanks to a strong final phase. There were still plenty of goals in this, but that didn’t change anything about the home win for ASV. In the last minute, young man Nicolas Körber also made his first appearance in the Bundesliga, coming into the squad in the backcourt for the injured Andreas Bornemann. In addition to Bornemann, Marian Orlowski and Yonatan Dayan were also missing due to injuries.
