Handball Bundesliga promoted ASV Hamm-Westfalen meets in the first round of the DHB Cup away. As an opponent, the team of trainer Michael Lerscht was drawn third division Wilhelmshavener HV.

Cologne/Hamm – In the middle of the summer break, the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) had scheduled the draw for the first round of the DHB Cup – Michael Lerscht, coach of the first division promoted ASV Hamm-Westfalen, followed the draw procedure live on the HBL -Youtube channel. “I was sitting at the computer anyway because I had to do something else,” said Lerscht, who accordingly saw in moving pictures how “Losfee” Daniel Haase, who as the youth coach of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen had been voted youth coach of the season, gave the ASV an away game at Wilhelmshaven HV. A draw that he received with mixed feelings: “Of course we would have liked to have played at home. But the most important thing is that we don’t have to drive that far. It could have been Rostock too. That wouldn’t have been so exciting.”

In terms of sport, the game at the third division, which will be played on August 27th or 28th, will fit in well with the Hammer preparation. “The cup opener is another test match for us,” Lerscht sees the prospects of being able to go far in the competition realistically. “It doesn’t matter who we got – we use the game to go through the opponent preparation under competitive conditions, so that the new guys in the squad can see how it’s going. And we will definitely try one or the other.”

WHV misses the climb at the last second

Last season ended with a bitter disappointment for the WHV. As champions of the 3rd league north, the team headed by coach Christian Köhrmann aimed to return to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the decisive duel at HSG Konstanz, however, the team gambled away promotion in the final seconds. Konstanz scored after the end of the season to make it 30:34, but had won the first leg 32:27 in the Wilhelmshaven Nordfrost Arena – and was therefore one goal better.

In the first round of the cup, the first division teams – ASV and VfL Gummersbach are still listed as second division teams – have not yet entered the competition. The second round will probably be drawn on August 31st as part of the Supercup in Düsseldorf. guna
