In the last game of the 17th matchday of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL), ASV Grünwettersbach overran Borussia from Düsseldorf. With 3-0 games and 9-0 sets, the supposed outsider prevailed against the record champions in front of a sold-out crowd.
Tiago Apolonia opened the encounter for Grünwettersbach against Düsseldorf’s Dang Qiu and indicated from the start that the hosts did not want to present themselves in the role of the supposed underdog. As was the case when the two players met in the cup semi-finals in Neu-Ulm at the beginning of the year, Apolonia prevailed against Qiu with a clear 3-0 (14:12, 11:6, 11:4). With this victory he secured his team the first important point of the day and thus laid the foundation for the eventual overall victory.
Kozul celebrates third win of the season
In the second singles game, Deni Kozul played for ASV against Kay Stumper. Kozul was able to convince with his serve game right from the start and put Stumper in trouble very early on. Over three sets, Stumper was unable to find a suitable answer to Kozul’s serves, who in turn hardly missed a chance and converted point after point. With an outstanding performance and to thunderous applause from the ASV fans, Kozul won 3-0 (11:3, 11:6, 11:4), which further extended ASV’s lead and put the Düsseldorf team in trouble.
Now it was time for veteran Timo Boll to get Düsseldorf back on the winning track. But Ricardo Walther did a lot to counteract this and demonstrated his enormous feel for the ball time and time again. With soulful punches and well-placed block balls, he gave Boll little chance of finding his way into the game, meaning that Düsseldorf’s hope of finding its way back into the game dwindled from set to set. The match point for a clear 3-0 final score (11:9, 11:8, 11:6) was cheered frenetically by the almost 500 ASV fans who had traveled, who can now look forward with visibly relief after a weak start to the second half of the season.
Voices about the game:
Timo Boll (Borussia Düsseldorf):“I don’t think it’s ever happened before that Düsseldorf was sent home without winning a set. A historically bad day for us, but I also have to say that Grünwettersbach was simply incredibly good. We had to pay the lesson today.”
Deni Kozul (ASV Grünwettersbach): “It was an outstanding performance by the entire team. Winning 9-0 against Düsseldorf is simply unbelievable. We felt the fans behind us from the start and it is always difficult for our opponents to play at ASV because the fans always have our backs. After the difficult start to the second half of the season, this victory did us a lot of good.”
The current table shows 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT at the top, followed by Borussia Düsseldorf in second place. With this win, ASV Grünwettersbach climbs to ninth place and is ready to continue causing surprises.
The next game in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) will take place on March 4th, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. between 1. FC Saarbrücken TT and TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt.
All TTBL games will be broadcast live on Dyn transmitted.
