Astros and Odorizzi sign a two-year agreement

Right-hander Jake Odorizzi and the Houston Astros finalized a two-year, $ 20.25 million guaranteed deal, or $ 23.5 million over three seasons.

The deal contains additional performance bonuses that could increase his salary up to 33.25 million in three years and possibly more depending on his appearances in 2021 and 2022.

Odorizzi highlights a rotation in Houston that was left without Framber Valdez indefinitely because of a broken finger in spring training. Astros ace Justin Verlander is also out as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Selected to the 2019 All-Star Game with Minnesota, Odorizzi only played four games last season due to injuries. He was 0-1 with a 6.59 ERA with the Twins.

Odorizzi, who turns 31 this month, will receive a $ 6 million signing bonus to be paid in equal installments every July 15 between 2021 and 2023, his salary of $ 6 million this season and $ 5 million in 2022.

The agreement includes a player option of 6.5 million for 2023 and an acquisition of 3.25 million, as well as an option in 2023 to increase for each goal 2 million dollars and the acquisition for one million if it reaches 20, 25, 30 points.

He will receive one point for each game as a starter or each mound appearance of 12 or more outs in 2021 and 2022.

He was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2019 when he started 30 games and had a career-best 15-7 with a 3.51 ERA. He had 178 strikeouts and allowed 139 hits that season with the Twins.

Odorizzi spent his last three seasons with Minnesota, also pitched for Tampa Bay and Kansas City in a nine-year career in the majors. He is 62-56 with a 3.92 ERA and 195 appearances (192 as a starter).
