SPACE — On March 28, 1963, NASA launched the first stage booster of the new Saturn 1 rocket on its fourth and final test flight. This unmanned suborbital flight paved the way for launching astronauts to the moon.
Following this initial test phase, NASA began direct flight launches with the second stage and boilerplate version of the Apollo Command/Service Module. The test flight, designated SA-4, carried a dummy of the second stage to test the real aerodynamics of the second stage.
Another thing that NASA tested during this flight was a new system to deal with engine failures. One of the eight engines was programmed to shut down mid-flight. The fuel from the stopped engine is then diverted to another engine to keep the rocket going. Source: Space.com
