Recently, large asteroids have often been flying near our planet, but not all of them pose a danger to us. Although astronomers do not exclude the possibility that in the distant future one of the space rocks may fall to Earth.
Writes about it ScienceAlert.
Astronomers say that potentially dangerous for our planet are asteroids 1 km wide, and at least 28 of these space rocks in the next 1000 years can fly up to Earth at a close distance. The asteroid that fell and destroyed prehistoric creatures was about 10 km and the explosion from it affected the planet’s climate and destroyed a huge number of living species. But a fall of a space rock 1 km wide or a little more could also wipe out hundreds of millions of people and cause global destruction.
According to experts, in the next thousand years, none of the asteroids should fall on our planet, although space conditions may make their own adjustments to the trajectory of space stones. The most dangerous so far is an asteroid called (7482) 1994 PC1, 1.3 km wide. The chance that it will crash into our planet in the distant future is 0.00151 percent, which is 10 times more than other large stones.
Cursor wrote earlier that the 1.5 km wide asteroid is the largest potentially dangerous asteroid discovered in the past eight years, and astronomers have dubbed it a “planet killer” as the effects of its impact will be felt on several continents.
