Astronomers in Indonesia Get Their Names Immortalized as the Names of Asteroids: A Tribute to the Bosscha Observatory

BANDUNG, WWW.PASJABAR.COM – Astronomers in Indonesia have their names immortalized as the names of asteroids. This name was given by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as a form of appreciation for the Bosscha Observatory which has an important role in the history of the development of astronomy in the southern sky.

Interestingly, the names confirmed are not limited to the names of astronomers or researchers, but also the names of popular figures. In fact, there is the name of a world legendary band, 8749 Beatles (1998 GJ10).

Reporting from the Bandung Institute of Technology’s Bosscha Observatory page on Friday (3/11/2023), the following Indonesian astronomer has immortalized the name of the asteroid:

5408 The

Taken from the name of The Pik Sin who served as Head of the Bosscha Observatory from 1959-1968.

12176 Hidayat

The name 12176 Hidayat is taken from the name Bambang Hidayat who was an active promoter of astronomy in Indonesia. He is known for his work on visual binaries and H emission line stars. Bambang was also Director of the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang from 1968-1999 and Vice President of the International Astronomical Union from 1994-2000.

112177 Raharto

The name Raharto is taken from the name of the Indonesian astronomer, Moedji Raharto. He is a senior lecturer at the Bandung Institute of Technology and was Director of the Bosscha Observatory in 2000-2003.

12178 Dhani

The name 12178 Dhani is taken from the astronomer and solar physicist (solar physics) from Indonesia, Herdiwijaya Dhani. He was Director of the Bosscha Observatory in 2004-2005. Herdiwijaya is known for his work on binaries and the sun’s magnetic activity, and their influence on weather and climate.

12179 Taufiq

The name Taufiq was taken by Indonesian astronomer, Taufiq Hidayat. He is a professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology and was Director of the Bosscha Observatory during 2006-2009.

12937 To press

Premana W. Premadi, who was born in 1964, is an astronomer at the ITB Bosscha Observatory and is an expert in cosmology and a teacher of theoretical astrophysics. (*/ran)
