VIVA – Astronomers have just discovered a treasure trove of ‘evil planet‘, is a free-floating planet, not orbiting a star.
Its mass is comparable to that of the planet Jupiter. The evil planets number more than 70, visible throughout the Milky Way galaxy. They are the largest group of cosmic travelers ever found.
Located in the constellations Scorpius and Ophiuchus, the planets are visible using a series of telescopes on land and in space.
Usually, evil planets are difficult to image because they are not the same as any of the stars that make them visible.
The planet was discovered with data collected over 20 years from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) telescope, the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite, and more, according to the website. The Verge, Saturday, December 25, 2021.
Astronomers at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Bordeaux, France, Nuria Miret-Roig and his team were able to capture faint heat signatures emitted from planets that formed in the last few million years.
“There may be billions of giant free-floating planets roaming freely in the Milky Way without a parent star,” said Herve Bouy, the study’s lead author.
