It wasn’t until 2023 that scientists using data from the Siding Spring observatory in Australia confirmed its true identity as a distant quasar.

To further solidify its status as the most luminous body ever discovered, observations were made using a state-of-the-art instrument mounted on the ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. These observations confirmed what astronomers had suspected all along – J0529-4351 is a truly remarkable quasar.
