SpaceX astronauts will use diapers on their return journey to Earth due to a broken toilet.
SpaceX astronauts leaving the International Space Station on Sunday will use diapers on their return journey to Earth due to a broken toilet in the company’s flagship Dragon capsule. The toilet leaked after the astronauts removed the floor panels from the capsule.
The problem first arose during SpaceX’s private flight in September, when a tube arrived unglued and urine spilled under the floorboards. The engineers determined that the urine did not affect the capsule.
According to NASA, astronauts will use absorbent wipes instead of using the toilet.
NASA astronaut Megan McArthur said the crew could use diapers for their 20-hour trip home, Sputnik reported.
McArthur at a press conference from space, “Space flight is fraught with many small challenges. That’s just one of the things we’ll face and deal with in our mission. So we’re not too worried.” said.
NASA officials have decided to bring McArthur and the rest of his crew, who have been on the International Space Station for 6 months, home after a series of meetings on Friday.
The trip, which was delayed due to bad weather and an undisclosed medical issue with a crew member, is expected to take place on Wednesday.
