Astronauts Teach Space Science in Tiangong Classroom

According to Xinhua News Agency, on the afternoon of September 21, the fourth lesson of “Tiangong Classroom” started at the China Space Station. New “space teachers” Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu, and Gui Haichao brought a wonderful space science class to the majority of teenagers. This is the first time that Chinese astronauts have given lessons in the Mengtian experimental cabin.

During the approximately 48-minute lecture, Shenzhou 16 astronauts Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu, and Gui Haichao vividly introduced the work and life scenes of the Mengtian experimental module of the space station, and demonstrated the spherical flame experiment, the wonderful “ping pong” experiment, Momentum conservation experiment and gyroscope experiment, and the scientific principles behind the experiments were vividly explained. During the teaching period, the astronauts had real-time interactive communication with teachers and students on the ground through video calls.

This teaching activity set up 5 ground classrooms in Beijing, Alxa League in Inner Mongolia, Yan’an in Shaanxi, Tongcheng in Anhui, and Ningbo in Zhejiang. About 2,800 student representatives participated in the on-site activities.

It is understood that during the application and development stage of the space station, “Tiangong Classroom” will continue to carry out space teaching activities.

Guangzhou primary school students conduct experiments “together” with astronauts

Yangcheng Evening News reporter Li Gang reported: On the afternoon of September 21, 43 students from Guangzhou University Town Primary School affiliated with South China Normal University (hereinafter referred to as “China Affiliated Guangzhou Primary School”) watched the live broadcast of the fourth lesson of “Tiangong Classroom” at the Guangdong Science Center , and carry out synchronous experiments.

During the approximately 48-minute lecture, the students of Guangzhou Primary School of Hua Fu watched with great interest the three “space teachers” Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu, and Gui Haichao doing various interesting experiments, and listened carefully to the three “space teachers” The astronauts’ wonderful explanations were accompanied by gasps of exclamation from time to time.

While astronauts are doing various wonderful scientific experiments in space, students are also conducting relevant experiments simultaneously with the astronauts at the Guangdong Science Center.

When the astronaut lit a candle, the students also lit the candle, and they soon discovered that the flame in space was spherical, and the flame on the ground was conical. It turns out that after a candle on the ground is lit, the hot air around the flame rises to form convection, and at the same time, under the influence of gravity, it takes on a cone shape. Candles in space are in a microgravity environment, which causes the burned gas to move in the same direction in all directions, giving it a spherical shape.

When astronauts used a drop of water to play “ping pong” in space, students also observed the hydrophobic properties of water, oil and other substances by dripping water on towels. Because the microgravity environment of the space laboratory is not available on the ground, students used props such as Newton’s pendulum balls and wrist balls to simulate and experience experiments such as momentum conservation and gyros performed by astronauts in space.

Wei Xiaotong, a science teacher at Hua Fu Guang Primary School, said that it is very meaningful to organize students to participate in such activities. By watching the live broadcast, everyone can intuitively feel what the space laboratory looks like and help them establish their ambition to explore space and science. In addition, through hands-on participation in experiments, students feel more involved and stimulate their interest. Through experiments, students’ reactions during this process can also be observed to help improve the school’s science curriculum.
