Jakarta – Recently, one of the NASA astronaut named Megan McArthur said she was concerned about seeing the earth while on the International Space Station (ISS). What is it?
So far, the condition of the earth can be seen from space using satellite imagery. Usually, astronauts or NASA share photos of the beauty of the earth, from views of the earth’s structures such as mountains and rivers to photos of the beauty of the earth at night.
However, what Megan McArthur saw some time ago was not the beauty of the earth as it had been previously shown. What really happened?
Causes NASA Astronauts Concerned with the Earth
Megan McArthur said her concern relates to the massive fires that are happening all over the world. In fact, some of the forest fires can be seen easily from the ISS.
“We are deeply saddened to see fires occurring in large parts of the earth, not only in the United States,” he said as quoted by Futurism.
This condition has actually become a global emergency where many scientists around the world are voicing this environmental issue.
However, according to Megan, there is a need for a global community to deal with the deplorable condition of the earth’s forests, as well as other environmental challenges.
“For several years, scientists around the world have sounded the alarm bell. This is a warning to the entire global community. It takes the global community to face this and to work through these challenges,” he said.
Forest Fire Areas Seen by NASA
Through satellite imagery, NASA explained the forest fires that hit various countries, from Siberia, Greece, Turkey, Spain to California.
Even in Siberia, which is famous for its cold airspace, fires are occurring on a large scale and have set new records in the annals of history.
So severe, smoke from the Siberian fires could reach the Arctic area, according to NASA observations.
“The Siberian fires are wider than all the fires that hit Earth today combined. NASA satellite footage shows a stretch of smoke over an area of 4,800 kilometers up to the North Pole,” said Megan.
Meanwhile, according to research by Dr Simon Evans from Carbon Brief, the Brazilian Amazon rainforest is also currently under threat due to deforestation or deforestation to be converted into agriculture, livestock and even residential or urban areas.
Researchers reveal that as much as 40% of the Amazon rainforest could turn into a landscape, such as a drier savanna if rainfall levels continue to decline as a result of climate change.
With this alarming condition, Megan hopes that the global community will take serious action to find solutions to forest fires that occur on various parts of the earth.
“Serious action is needed to deal with fire accident of this kind, especially by listening to the advice of scientists. If not, the consequences could be dire,” he said.
