Astronauts Embark on SpaceX Mission to International Space Station for Half-Year Stay

The mission will last more than half a year.

Four astronauts representing four nations and space agencies from around the world blasted off to the International Space Station on Saturday aboard a SpaceX rocket. As the station writes CNNthus starting a mission that should last more than half a year.

Mission commander Jasmin Moghbeli from NASA, Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen representing the European Space Agency, Satoshi Furukawa representing Japan’s JAXA and Russian cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov from Roskosmos are traveling into space.

The mission marks the eighth flight operated by NASA and SpaceX as part of the agency’s commercial crew program to carry astronauts to the space station since SpaceX’s first crewed mission in 2020.

The research they will conduct on the station will include a number of experiments. For example, they will investigate the potential risk of spreading bacteria and fungi from manned space missions. The team will analyze whether microorganisms can be expelled from the space station’s vents and ejected into the vacuum of space.
