Jakarta: NASA’s preparations for the Artemis mission, the human landing on the Moon, which will take place in 2024 will be delayed even though they are partnering with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to build a moon lander.
The report released by NASA states that the Artemis mission will be delayed and will not necessarily fly to the Moon in 2024. This is because the astronaut suit that will be used is considered not ready for production, including the rocket that will be used.
Quoted from The Verge, NASA has released a report stating that NASA is still finding problems in making the latest astronaut suits that will be used to explore the Moon to a giant rocket called NASA’s Space Launch System.
NASA’s Chief Inspector is said to have released a report on this condition and acknowledged that the new astronaut suit will only be available in two units as early as April 2025. NASA will also spend an additional USD 1 billion for the development of the astronaut suit.
NASA has so far spent USD 420 million or around IDR 6 trillion since the development of the latest astronaut suit began in 2007. This investment figure will continue to grow until it reaches USD 625.2 million in 2025.
Every year the design of the astronaut suit continues to change according to the target or space mission to be carried out. The newest astronaut suit project for the Artemis mission called xEMU was showcased in 2019.
NASA considers that the astronaut suit used on the International Space Station (ISS) is currently unsuitable for a human landing on the Moon and that its design and technology have not been updated for decades.
