SPACE — A NASA astronaut of Iranian descent sees his parents’ homeland from space. Jasmin Moghbeli photographed Iran from the International Space Station (ISS) and shared her experiences on X (Twitter).
Although the woman had been in space for three months on SpaceX Crew-7, the weather and the ISS’s busy schedule made it difficult for her to see Tehran. However, he finally got the chance.
“Finally, everything aligned and I was able to take some great photos. “The orbit made us pass (Iran) almost directly over our heads (space perspective),” wrote Moghbeli on Friday, November 17, 2023. “This is probably the closest I have ever come to where my parents were born and raised,” he added.

Moghbeli’s parents left Iran during the Iranian Revolution. It was a series of events in 1978-79 that overthrew Iran’s former monarchy with the declaration of the Islamic Republic.
Moghbeli added that he recently spoke with his parents, who now live in Texas, about the Iranian photos. “At least it was fun to text with them, and describe the different places they lived growing up and in their early days together, through photos I took.”
