AstroCamera Competition: Hungarian Astrophotographers Shine with Stunning Images

What is the AstroCamera competition?

In the first three years, only Poles took part in the competition, but from 2014, AstroCamera entered the international arena. The winners will receive cash prizes and specially designed sculptures created by local sculptor Tomasz Radziewicz. True to tradition, entries were expected in three categories again this year: deep sky objects, celestial bodies of the Solar System and astroscapes. The hundreds of images received were evaluated this year by a ten-member jury, whose members are: Magdalena Maszewska (astronomer, president of the jury), Krzysztof Czart (ESO), Piotr Gnacinski (University of Gdańsk), Bogdan Jarzyna (astrophotographer), Wojtek Korsak (Polish Association of Photographers), Maciej Mikolajewski (Urania), Bogna Pazderska (astronomer), Przemyslaw Rudz (Polish Space Agency – POLSA), Sebastian Soberski (Polish Astronomical Association – PTMA) and Magdalena Wiecek-Olszewska (astronomer, former jury president).

This year’s successes

On June 28, 2023, the results were made public. For the first time in the history of the competition, the work of a Hungarian astrophotographer could be on the top step of the podium. Majzik Lionel his comet photos won first place in the “Solar System Celestial Bodies” category. The jury already rated one of his shots with a third place last year, but now his five comet pictures were chosen as the best of the category as a kind of photo series.

Péter Feltóti’s three different images of interstellar dust and gas clouds and one galaxy photo were awarded in Gdansk.
