BVFingerprints, ‘mugshots’ and a prostitute who threatened her. Astrid Coppens (39) — now six months pregnant — was once in an American cell, she confesses in the VTM program ‘Truth, dare or do’. “In the end I paid $12,000 to be released.”

Even seventeen years after the facts, Astrid still remembers the night like yesterday. “I was 22 years old and invited a friend to watch a movie with a glass of wine,” she begins. “After the movie I took her home, but on the way we were stopped by the police. I was driving an open car and she had thrown out a cigarette butt. That was not allowed, because that was littering (pollution, ed.). I did an alcohol test and had 0.08 per mille, which was the limit.”

“What followed afterwards, you only see in movies,” she continues. “Fingerprints, mugshots… I was taken to the Van Nuys County Jail and threatened by a drug whore. She said she’d have me killed when I got out of jail. I was scared. Oh guys, that was the longest night of my life for me.”

“Everyone was wearing orange overalls and chained together. There I was with my shorts and flip-flops, with only a jute blanket against the cold. Peeing had to be behind a glass wall, everyone could see it.” She was released after one night. “I got a lawyer on the phone who could get me out of there,” says Astrid. “In the end I paid $12,000 to be released. For the next four years, I was stopped at the US border for interrogation. Very ambitious, but I learned from it. Since then I never drive with one drop of alcohol again.”

crazy lady
Astrid tells the story in a new season of ‘Truth, Dare or Do’. Just like last year, four BVs play the well-known game, each taking a course of the accompanying dinner. In the first episode, Astrid is joined by cyclo-cross rider Niels Albert (36), ‘Home’ actor Mathias Vergels (30) and Belgian cat Julie Vanloo (29).

“A really cool bunch,” says Astrid. “I was very happy to see Niels again, that was from ‘De Verraders’ ago. I didn’t know Mathias and Julie, but of course we got to know each other. Julie was a really nice one, with such a funny West Flemish accent. She was apparently a big fan of mine, because she told me how tough she thought I was in ‘De Verraders’. It’s crazy, I still get asked about this almost every day. However, I feared that I would end up there like a mad lady.”

Still a boy?
Later this summer, Coppens still has recordings of ‘James the musical’ on the program, but the Antwerp woman is now also almost half a year pregnant with a second child. Whether her daughter Billie-Ray (3) will have a brother or a sister, the former top model is still in the middle. “If it had been up to me, I would have told you long ago, but Bram wants to wait a little longer,” says Astrid. “We’ll be revealing the gender soon.”

Although she does say that this pregnancy is heavier than the first. “My stomach has grown much faster and I also notice that standing up for a long time or sitting still for a long time is more difficult. But I’m proud of my belly, Bram also thinks it’s great that my breasts are bigger (laughs).” Finally, the program includes a map marker that predicts the future. He talks about ‘an important young man’ in her life. So the baby will be a boy after all? “Who knows? Just a little patience”, laughs Astrid.
