AstraZeneca Vaccine Not to Blame for Austrian Nurse’s Death / Article / LSM.lv

The Covid-19 vaccine developed by the drug manufacturer AstraZeneca may not be to blame for the death of a nurse who died after vaccination in Austria, AFP reports, citing a statement from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

The European Pharmacovigilance Authority on Wednesday, 10 March announced, that an initial examination shows that a batch of AstraZeneca vaccines used in Austria may not be responsible for the death of one nurse and the hospitalization of another nurse with pulmonary embolism (pulmonary artery block).

“There are currently no indications that vaccination has caused such conditions that are not listed as side effects of this vaccine,” the EZA said in a statement. “Although a quality defect is considered unlikely at this stage, batch quality is being investigated.”

The authorities continue to assess all possible problems with the vaccine batch, the EZA said in a statement, promising to report on the progress of the assessment.

Following an incident with two nurses, one of whom died after vaccination, Austria announced on Monday, March 8 that it would stop using the relevant batch of vaccine produced by AstraZeneca. Four other European Union countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Luxembourg – also temporarily suspended the vaccine doses of the batch.

CONTEXT:

Health Inspectorate and State Agency of Medicines (ZVA) on Tuesday, March 9, suspended One batch of Covid-19 vaccines developed by AstraZeneca under the serial number is ABV5300. This decision was taken as a precautionary measure after receiving information from Austria about the health problems of the two vaccinated persons. The ABV5300 batch was shipped to a total of 17 countries and contained a total of one million doses of the vaccine, AFP reports.

In Austria, a 49-year-old nurse died ten days after vaccination, while another 35-year-old nurse developed serious health problems. The results of the deceased nurse’s section are expected next week.
