Following the European Union (EU), the use of a vaccine for the prevention of Corona 19 jointly developed by a multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and Oxford University in the UK has been approved in Italy.
According to ANSA news agency, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) said on the 30th (local time) that it would approve the use of the AstraZeneca Corona 19 vaccine for adults 18 years of age or older in accordance with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) guidelines.
Earlier, the EMA recommended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine on the 29th, and the EU Commission accepted the recommendation and officially approved the use of the vaccine.
AstraZeneca is the third Corona 19 vaccine approved for use in Italy after Pfizer-Bioentech and Modena.
However, AIFA recommends first use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in adults until the age of 54. This is because the efficacy is uncertain because sufficient clinical trials have not been conducted for those over the age of 55.
At the same time, it was recommended that Pfizer or Modena vaccines be given first to those aged 55 or older.
Whether the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective for the elderly is still controversial in Europe.
When a German media recently pointed out that the vaccine is only 8% effective for adults over 65 years old, AstraZeneca countered it as “complete misinformation.”
French President Emmanuel Macron also said in an interview with the world’s major media on the 29th that the AstraZeneca vaccine “is nothing but invalid for people over the age of 65.” Drew attention.
