AstraZeneca: Corona Vaccine Effective 90 Percent in Phase 3 Trials Page all

Following Pfizer and Moderna vaccines

Previously, at least two vaccine developers, Moderna and Pfizer / BioNTech, had claimed their experimental vaccine was able to provide protection of more than 90 percent.

Although the effectiveness of the vaccines is not as high as the other two, the injections made by Oxford are much cheaper, and they are easier to store and distribute around the world.

So, vaccines will still play an important role in dealing with a pandemic, if they get regulatory approval.

Testing

More than 20,000 volunteers were involved, with half in the UK and the rest in Brazil. The effectiveness of the vaccine ranges from 62-90 percent, depending on the dose of vaccine given.

No serious side effects regarding the safety of the vaccine have been confirmed. The vaccine is also well tolerated in both dosing regimens.

In a statement, Prof Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and chief investigator of the Oxford vaccine trials said the findings show that it has an effective vaccine that will save many lives.

“Interestingly, we found that one of our dosing regimens was probably about 90 percent effective and if this dosing regimen was used, more people could be vaccinated with the planned vaccine supply,” he said.

Quoting NBCNews, vaccine maker AstraZeneca, which uses a weak version of the common cold virus, said the vaccine could be given in existing health care settings.
