AstraZeneca Announces New Delays in Delivery to EU | Instagram VTM NEWS

Deliveries of AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine to the European Union are experiencing further delays. The company announced this today. The reason given is export restrictions.

“AstraZeneca regrets announcing a reduction in the supply of vaccines against Covid-19 to the European Union, despite the unremitting work to accelerate supplies,” said a spokesman.

Due to production problems, the British-Swedish company had already decided to use production sites outside the EU for deliveries to the European member states. “Unfortunately, export restrictions will reduce deliveries in the first quarter” and “probably” in the second, too.

AstraZeneca aims to deliver 100 million doses in the first semester: 30 million in the first quarter and 70 million in the second.

The European Commission is counting on an acceleration in deliveries in the second quarter. The Commission had been heavily criticized for AstraZeneca’s slowness of deliveries and delays.

Vaccine deliveries can reach an average of 100 million doses per month between April and June, with all vaccines combined. The European Commission wants 70 percent of Europeans to be vaccinated by the end of the summer.

AstraZeneca had announced at the end of January that it could deliver only 40 million doses to the EU in the first quarter, instead of the 120 million initially promised. The company pointed to production problems in a Belgian factory: the Seneffe site in Hainaut.
