Coronavirus Could be approved in coming days
With the Pfizer vaccine being rolled out in Spain, and across Europe, the next which is expected to be approved in the UK is the AstraZaneca vaccine.
Alongside researchers from Oxford University, AstraZaneca have held trials for the vaccine which had an effectiveness of 90 percent when people receive a half dose, followed by a full dose a month later. When two full doses were administered the vaccine was 62 percent effective.
“We think we have figured out the winning formula and how to get efficacy that,” Pascal Soriot, chief executive of thepharmaceutical company told the Sunday Times, “after two doses, is up there with everybody else.
“I can’t tell you more because we will publish at some point. We would have preferred a simpler set of results, but overall we thought these are positive.”
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are 95 percent effective, which is the level that AstraZeneca are moving to.
The AstraZeneca vaccine is different from those developed by Pfizer and Moderna as it created from a genetically modified virus, rather than Messenger RNA, and thus doesn’t require to be stored at extremely low temperatures, as the other two do.
