Magnificent frescoes, including a striking mythological scene, were discovered during excavations in Pompeii – the famous archaeological site near Naples, reported AFP, quoted by BTA.

Excavations during restoration work led to the “discovery of these frescoes of great value” in the House of Leda, one of the residences of the ancient city of Pompeii, destroyed and buried under ash in 79 AD by the eruption of Vesuvius.

The most impressive is undoubtedly the fresco with a mythological scene depicting Phrixus and his twin Hela fleeing from their stepmother Ino on the back of the ram with the golden fleece. Phrixus, riding a ram rearing up on his hind legs, watches helplessly as his hapless sister Hela falls into the waters over which they float.

This fresco, according to the director of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtrigel, is designed like a framed picture on a predominantly golden yellow wall, decorated with delicate decorations.

Among the other frescoes discovered are still lifes and portraits of women painted in an elliptical shape.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pompeii is the second most visited tourist site in Italy after the Colosseum in Rome and covers a total area of approximately 22 hectares, a third of which is still buried under ash.
